on the consulate in benghazi. four americans were killed as you recall, including ambassador chris stevens. the military security officer will tell his story to congress on wednesday but tonight he sits down with sharyl attkisson. >> reporter: army green beret lieutenant colonel andrew wood first set foot in libya last february to lead an elite 16-man counterterrorism team. from the moment he arrived he says he saw chaos. >> shooting incidents that occurred, many instances involving the local security guard force we were training. constantly there was battles going on between militias, criminal activity and that became increasing danger as time went on as well. >> reporter: wood met daily with ambassador christopher stevens to discuss security. that's stevens on the right and colonel wood on the left at a memorial day service in tripoli. was he concerned about security? >> he was. he was constantly concerned about the threats to not just himself but the entire staff there. >> reporter: was there what you saw as a visible security drawdown during the period of time you were in libya? >> yes

ambassador chris stevens was in fact worried about security threats in the weeks before he and three others were killed on 9/11 of this year. we're live in banghazi, libya. greg, you delivered such a moving story last night in our special report about banghazi. tell us what's happening on the ground now there, please. >> yeah, thanks. it's been about 5 1/2 weeks on the attack in the u.s. mission which left ambassador stevens and three other americans dead. it's still a horrible place to see, and there's still more answers to be found out. we spent a good deal of time there in the past couple of days. the main residence is a burned-out shell. you can till smell the smoke from the diesel fuel fire set by the mob. you can still see the signs of desperation, blood spattered in a bathroom, handprints on a wall, the place ransacked. as to the answers to the remaining questions, a few possibilities. one eyewitness tells us that a mob marched to the compound the night of the attack, chanting bloodthirsty slogans before they attacked. that could be an explanation why we're hearing from other people

administration to admit that this was a terrorist attack. >> well, now ambassador stevens, as you have heard, the father of ambassador stevens is saying, quote, it would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue. it has to be objectively examined. it does not belong in the campaign arena. is the romney campaign wrong to politicize this while an investigation is ongoing? >> well, i think that when it comes to ambassador stevens' death all of us honor him for his service and his contribution to both our country and to what he did to help further the peace in libya. but what i think is an issue is this question of leadership and then how the events unfolded, what the white house did know, when it did know -- and when it knew it. so i think there's a separation. it's not necessarily about ambassador stevens but, in fact, about foreign policy and leadership and how this administration is handling the crisis that has stemmed from this internally. remember, richard, these were the same folks that came out and condemned anybody who suggested it was anything other than a video and now we
